Hi folks: We'll finally be having a program at the end of this month, and it should be
fun. This one is for anyone out there who wants to get more out the work
they're doing right now -- more in the sense of more meaning, more say, more focus, more happiness, more joy. An excellent way to rescue yourself from the winter doldrums even before they start.
Our speaker will be writer and motivational speaker Jody Urquhart, author of a soon-to-be-released book, "All Work and No SAY Takes the Passion Away." Jody, who happens to be based in Vancouver, is an enthusiastic, engaging, and humourous speaker whose professional focus is on helping others find meaning and joy in their work and professional lives. Her monthly column, "Creating More Meaningful Work", is featured in over twenty-five trade journals, covering topics such as "Avoiding Autopilot Syndrome", trust in the workplace, and the importance of seeing the difference your own work makes. Appropriately, her focus for our meeting will be on ways in which we as information professionals can make our current work richer and more meaningful.
There is no charge for the program, but there is limited seating, so please respond earlier rather than later. If email isn't convenient, you can call me (Cathy) at the phone number below. You can fax me, too, but I don't know why you'd want to do that.
Librarians often feel uniquely qualified to comment on intranet
usability. Yet how many of us truly take the opportunity to share our insights?
How many of us value the observations of others more than we value our
own?
Many of us work with with intranets, either as users, designers, consultants, or information architects. We all have our own perspectives, and if we share our collective knowledge we can identify opportunities and possible solutions. Are you using an intranet that's driving you
crazy?
Are you fixing one that's broken? Do you have an idea or experience you'd
like to share? Then come to our next Volug session!
On Thursday, February 22nd, Bobbie Merilees will be leading an hour's discussion on Intranet Development and Usability Studies. As a
consultant, Bobbie has helped an impressive array of companies assess and
implement information and knowledgement solutions. With her background as a former corporate librarian, a former IBM Systems Engineer, and an MBA, Bobbie has used her expertise to help organizations align their information and knowledgement projects with business and organizational priorities while maintaining a focus on users and usability.
While Bobbie will be offering her own insights into the running of
intranet usability studies, we'll also be tapping into her expertise as a
focus group leader to lead the discussion.
So think about the following, and join us two weeks from now.
Everyone is welcome -- the more perspectives, the better. It should be a lively
discussion!

At the June 1999 AGM the Volug programming committee considered ending the distribution of the Volug newsletter Online/Onward in favour of electronic only communication. Volug members will be canvassed in the Fall. It is expected that fees for joining Volug will remain the same and will be reallocated to enhancing and maintaining the Volug web site. Currently, a domain and other professional web design services are being sought. Programming ideas were posted in the listserv on July 5.
